In European folklore, mermaids (sometimes called sirens) were natural beings who, like fairies, had magical powers. Some people are downright serious about it, like in Fukuoka, Japan there’s a temple that houses “mermaid bones”. Legend has it that a mermaid was found in Hakata Bay in 1222.

Perhaps the most famous mermaid of all time is Ariel, the Little Mermaid. Many a little girl, has had her very own Little Mermaid party.
